Woonsocket RI Community Profile & History

Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a historic mill city in the northernmost region of the state. First settled in the late 17th Century, it remained a quiet backwoods region inhabited by Quaker farmers and millers until nearly one hundred years later. The early settlers farmed the land and utilized the power of the Woonsocket Falls.

With the first stirrings of the Industrial Revolution in nearby Pawtucket, the region underwent a rapid transformation as local entrepeneurs harnessed the water power of the Blackstone River. Between 1810 and 1830, the villages of Jenckesville, Bernon, Globe Village, Hamlet Village and Woonsocket Falls Village sprang up around the new mills. New settlers arrived from surrounding towns, Europe, and, especially, Quebec. The present-day community was incorporated from three of the mill villages in 1867, becoming a city with the integration of the three other villages in 1888. After a period of decline as a result of the Great Depression, the city's fortunes were rejuvenated during World War II, when it became a center for fabric manufacture in support of the war effort.

Today manufacturing still dominates the city's economy, but to a lesser degree. A number of high-tech and financial firms have established headquarters here in recent decades, the most notable being CVS Corporation. The city's central location and easy accessibility make it an ideal location for business development and residence. One of the principal cities of the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor, the city boasts a great number of historical and recreational sites, including the Museum of Work and Culture, an interactive museum which celebrates the history of French Canadian immigrants in New England's early mill cities; the Stadium Theatre, built in 1926 and featuring a full calendar of dramatic, musical, and dance performances; the St. Ann's Church Complex, a historic mecca for the city's large French-Canadian community that now serves as an arts and cultural center; six historic mills; and seven National Historic Districts. Each October, the city hosts Autumnfest, a three-day celebration that features a fireworks display, arts and crafts, live entertainment, carnival-style amusements, an International Food Court, a beer garden, children's athletic competitions and a parade. Televised throughout Rhode Island, the festival draws thousands of visitors to this historic city each year.
